| Slip and Fall Facts Tub/Shower/Tile Safety and Maintenance Facts: Over 170,000 people are injured in tubs and showers each year in the United States alone (National Safety Council). A disproportionately high amount of them are guests of hotels, motels, resorts, and other lodging establishments. Slip-and-falls are the second leading cause of accidental deaths after car accidents (OSHA) with the average cost to defend them at just over $50,000 and average judgments over $100,000. The vast majority of tubs, showers, and tile floors tested using OSHA, ADA or accepted industry standards, prove that most establishments achieve a rating result of "Dangerous" or "Very Dangerous". With staggering statistics like these, management and loss control experts are forever busy with the latest solutions. Prevention: Until recently, the accepted method of slip prevention on tile floors, concrete, tubs, and showers, have been the application of gritty tapes, coatings, or mats. While all three create immediate solutions, they also guarantee unnecessary maintenance and housekeeping expense as they wear, dislodge, dissipate, or create odor by harboring germs and fungus. They inevitably result in unsightly marks from uneven wear, permanent epoxy residue or even damage to porcelain, grout, or tile. Even non-slip additives in housekeeping products get washed away, need constant replenishing or polishing and are thus expensive short-term solutions. Understandably so, managers planning for long-term safety and maintenance are a little shy of these short-term solutions that guarantee more man hours. Cure: Over the last decade, major chemical manufacturers have developed and refined NO SLIP treatments for tile and concrete surfaces and porcelain tubs that bond and penetrate without negatively changing the appearance or coating the surface. Since these new polymers are not coatings or epoxies, they do not create sticky residues or uneven wear. One manufacturer distributes a polymer treatment that is virtually invisible and can be applied by trained experts at a rate of about 20 minutes per tub or equal area of tile. Better yet, it is Ph neutral and requires no special cleaning or treatment afterward for a warranted period of two years on tile or up to ten years on tubs! There are very few companies that have the expertise to apply this particular product, but they are out there. Most of them guarantee their product while their customers report fewer accidents and less maintenance on tubs, showers, and tile floors. | |
